Biography
Birthday: September 24th
First Appearance: Animal Crossing (2001)
We first met Blathers back in Animal Crossing (2001), where his role of assessing specimens and curating the museum was very similar. Back then, however, Blathers was not able to assess fossils by himself, as he did not have the correct qualifications. You would need to send your fossils off to the Faraway Museum to have them assessed. In the next game, Blathers had passed his exam and could assess the fossils himself. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf he dreamt up a second floor for the museum, where players could make their own exhibits, making it the biggest museum yet.
Expert in zoology and palaeontology, Blathers is quite an eccentric character. Tom Nook calls him to the island once you find yourself in need of a naturalist to help identify the local fauna. You will first meet him in his makeshift tent, but after receiving enough of your donations, he will upgrade it to a full-sized museum.
As an owl, Blathers can often be found asleep during the daytime; he is sure to wake up once you speak to him, however. Unlike most owls, he is terrified of bugs and will recoil and shudder every time you donate one to him. However, he is quite fond of fish and is fascinated by fossils. Blathers can provide you with a treasure trove of information about each specimen you donate. In fact, it is fair to say that Blathers likes to talk… a lot. You should pay attention, though; he is an expert in his field. Nobody on the island knows as much about bugs and fish as Blathers does.
Island Role
As the local curator, Blathers is in charge of accepting donations to the museum. As soon as it has been built, you will be able to donate any new fish or bugs that you have caught directly to Blathers. These will then be put on display for all to see in their respective wings of the museum, complete with a plaque commemorating the date it was donated and the name of the resident who donated it.
Fossil Assessment
As you explore the island, you may occasionally notice little cracks in the ground. If you dig into these cracks using a shovel, you will often find rare fossils. Once you have one in hand, be sure to bring it to Blathers as soon as you can – he will be able to use his robust palaeontology knowledge to identify any fossils you excavate, which can then be donated, or sold for a nice profit. While he is still in the tent, Blathers will only be able to identify one fossil at a time, but after the Museum has been built, he will be able to assess as many fossils as you can bring him in one swift go.
Ask Blathers
While Blathers may not reward you for your donations with items, he will always be able to offer you something even more valuable – knowledge! Whenever you donate a new critter or fossil, Blathers will offer to tell you more about the specimen you have provided This is entirely optional of course, but who can pass up the opportunity to learn from such a dignified educator? Additionally, if you would like to hear his scholarly opinion on an item after it has been donated, he will happily repeat himself if you show him a second identical specimen to jog his memory after the Museum has been built.
